Wee Wrestling

Not all wrestlers are bear-sized meat crushers with elaborate costumes. For these young athletes, wrestling is an outlet and a way to interact with other kids from the region.

(Close Transcript)

Justin Curtis:

I like to wrestle because you can get stronger.

Kids:

Down. Two! Down. Three! Down. Four!

Justin Curtis:

You can get your muscles built up so if someone's trying to hit you, you can hit them back and they can be hurt more than you are.

Doug Curtis:

Go for the legs! Shoot! Shoot!

Doug Curtis:

'Rew, get the legs!

Chip Stanzak:

The favorite part for me about being a coach is that I get a chance to see these kids progress, and I get a chance to see them smile, and laugh.

Chip Stanzak:

I think that wrestling is a great sport, not only because of the physicalities that it can present, but more so the emotional bonds you make with people in the sport itself.

Dave Tope:

Scrawl! Scrawl! Cross-face! Cross-face him! Cross-face!

Dave Tope:

He's trying to find his own footsteps, is what I'm kind of looking at. I don't exactly want to see him follow in my footsteps, but he has an outlet other than having to sit down and having to take it.

Kids:

Five, Six, Boom!

Chip Stanzak:

There are other things to be learned on an individual level: hard work, perseverance, how it can pay off; physical conditioning, mental and emotional conditioning too.

Andrew Curtis:

It's fun.

Andrew Curtis:

Making people cry... getting trophies.

Doug Curtis:

I told the boys I'd give them a dollar for every person they made cry.

Doug Curtis:

If he's crying and bleeding at the same time it's two bucks.

Doug Curtis:

No money's left my pocket yet.

Andrew Curtis:

That's why I do it...

Doug Curtis:

Nothing motivates a kid like money.

Doug Curtis:

You did good 'bub. Win, lose, or draw, you did good.

Chip Stanzak:

It's not all about winning, especially when kids are this young. It's not like they're collegiate athletes on scholarship.

Chip Stanzak:

What I look for is sportsmanship, he learns how to communicate with not just his teammates and root for them, but also other guys around southern Ohio, that he meets from other teams.

Chip Stanzak:

The marines have a funny saying, it's "Once a Marine, always a Marine."

Chip Stanzak:

Once a wrestler, always a wrestler.
